What is Shiatsu?

Originating in Japan, Shiatsu is a therapeutic form of acupressure, massage, muscle meridian stretching as well as joint manipulation and mobilization.

Based in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shiatsu aims is to restore balance through the channels in the body known as meridians in order to promote optimal health and create a situation where the body is free to heal itself.

Shiatsu involves applying pressure to the body, with the practitioner using mostly thumbs and palms, and when necessary, forearms, elbows, knees and feet.

Shiatsu practitioners are trained to recognize patterns of disharmony in the body, and can use this information to restore balance.

To examine a patient, a practitioner will sometimes use palpation and pulse diagnosis.

Shiatsu is great for treating many other common conditions such as headaches, stress and anxiety, digestive disorders, fatigue, insomnia, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, muscle pain and stiffness, joint pain, body pain, back pain, and works wonders for maintaining general health and wellness.

Shiatsu is non invasive and done through light clothing, without oils, with the patient lying on a comfortable mat on the floor.

Depending on the individual, regular visits can be supremely beneficial to one’s health and wellbeing. Some may benefit from a once a month session and others will be wise to take advantage of weekly or twice monthly sessions
